Jules dejeuner sur l’Herbe (Lunch on the Grass) is credited with starting the Impressionist movement. The contrasting, complementary colors and bold black outlines were used to create a dramatic effect. In the late 1870s and early 1880s, artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin were even bolder in their use of color. During the nineteenth century, artists such as Georges Seurat (1859-1991) and Paul Signac (1863–1955) dominated impressionism. Pissarro displayed his pointillism, while Degas became interested in alternative perspectives after experimenting with the concept of pointillism.Īs he grew older, Cézanne’s paintings became more abstract and geometrically oriented. They were inspired by Monet and Renoir, who frequented the same cafés and restaurants in Paris as the first impressionists. Some impressionists, such as William Turner (1785-1851) and Eugne Delacroix (1788-1863), are inspired by their fine art predecessors. The term ‘impressionism’ has come to refer to art produced between the 1860s and the end of the nineteenth century that challenged the conventions of fine art. They used bright colors, thick applications, and thick layers to create vibrant landscapes and everyday life. Impressionists frequently painted in the open to capture the fleeting effects of light on colors and forms. It was an art movement that flourished in Paris in the early nineteenth century. The painting is considered to be the first work of art in the Impressionist style. The painting is called “Impression, Sunrise” and it was painted in 1872. The image above is one of the most famous paintings in the world, and it was created by the French artist Claude Monet.
